UPDATE: Apparently this is now officially THE CITY'S WORST FIRE SINCE 9/11, as they keep repeating over and over on the news reports. There are no reported deaths, but apparently twelve firefighters have suffered minor injuries and five were taken to the hospital.
It started at 5 am this morning, and as of this afternoon, they don't expect to snuff it out for at least another 24 hours. GREAT! Gigantic plumes of smoke for over 24 hours, and it's only a few blocks from my house. I can only imagine what kind of toxic shit this thing is unleashing into the air that will soon find its way into my apartment. Asshole pyromaniacs.
yeah it looked pretty bad even from the other side of the point. i might have been a little more worried if i hadn't seen it on the news before leaving the house.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it sure surpised me this morning. Funny about the air quality in Greenpoint--now we've got poop and smoke!
ReplyDeleteAmazing plume visible all the way over by the Queensboro bridge in LIC.
Poor Greenpoint, I am so sad for my old neighborhood! (I forgot about the sewage treatment plant too.)
ReplyDeleteOn the bright side, maybe those bastards that were planning on building high-rise apartments in Greenpoint will be locked up for arson.
ReplyDeleteWe should all take comfort in the fact that "The city's Department of Environmental Protection has been on the scene and told residents the smoke is not UNusually hazardous." (Compliments of NY1.com)
ReplyDeleteA few years from now, when your lungs collapse from the inhalation of toxins, your bereaved widow can sue the city for "Greenpoint Syndrome."
ReplyDeleteI live in a neighborhood where industrial buildings are being converted to lofts. We have a surprising number of fires, with insurance money covering the cost of renovating the buildings for condo sales. Not that such a thing would ever happen in New York.
